learning with Batman

Batman here in his previous life, used to have a much better career option. If you can call twirling a lollipop one. He has since run out of batteries and been cleaned to start his new job. Teaching.

Jayden, like almost any kid I know, has way too much imagination creativity. Somehow he picked up the name Batman (you think it is an affinity for all things ‘B’?) and figured out the hands can move. And now, he proudly says ‘up’ and ‘down’ as he does the corresponding movement. How he learnt I am not sure. But it does make for a good trick to show. :P

And hmm, I guess this means that he has an early interest in comics? Must have inherited this from the father.

the value of money

These days if you come up to our home, you’d find that you’d have to pay an ‘entrance fee’. Jayden has just grasped the concept of money / coins and is hard at work collecting money to buy a watch. He asks earnestly for coins to feed the lil coinbox he has (inherited from me) and has been feeding it with vigour.

He’d even tell you he is saving up for a watch. if you have maxed out your quota, and tell him your pockets are empty by turning them inside out, he’d just make a dive for your bag where he knows there is a stash. Children these days, too smart!

I guess it is never too early to start them. Although, I pray he doesn’t think of feeding the kiddy rides!

**sidenote :: he loves to wear watches. Don’t ask why. He even managed to hammer (slap, bang whatever!) my dead watch into a second revival. But he usually settles for a Swatch whose battery has long since gone flat. Not that he knows anyway.

hello, my name is Jayden

Magnadoodle boards are great fun for doodling, drawing and writing. At least it keeps his attention for quite a bit. Far better than a book. It also helps to have a comfy portable ‘chair’.

At 26 months (and a day), Jayden has quite a personality of his own. He is not one to sit still all day, not least it is with Barney on screen, magnadoodle board on hand or stacker / nesting toys to pack. Otherwise he will be asking to ‘eat eat’ (raisins only thank you), ‘walk walk’ (anywhere is great, but swings are the best) or rolling about the house on his own set of wheels. His energy level is quite literally, boundless.

of rainbows and promises

It has been pouring like clockwork almost every afternoon for a week (maybe more!) now. And many rainbows have been sighted. Unfortunately not by us. So after yesterday’s downpour, we scurried to the window to look for the arc across the sky .. and finally caught sight of one. In real life.

The boy’s only encounter with rainbows thus far are probably the reflection of light in prisms or the purple dinosaur’s rainbow to illustrate colour. I doubt he really knew what he was supposed to be looking at when I pointed excitedly up in the sky at the ‘rainbow’.

Beyond a lovely array of colours and a scientific explanation of how and why rainbows form, we remembered the promise God made to Noah (and us all!). And sang the children’s ditty.

It rained, it rained for forty nights and daysies, daysies,
It rained, it rained for forty nights and daysies, daysies,
Almost drove poor Noah crazy, crazy,
Children of the Lord.

The sun came out and dried up the landy, landy,
The sun came out and dried up the landy, landy,
Everything was fine and dandy, dandy,
Children of the Lord.

colours make me happy

Jayden’s very into the stacker-toy (don’t ask me the proper name!) lately. And finally after such a long time, he is actually using it as it is meant to be. He used to use the cups as containers! Now he will sit and stack them all nicely away. He gets very agitated if you try and stack them in a tower.

Funny how he is so possessive over them. Especially since they are were mine. Yes Jayden… these are way older than you!

alphabets part ii

We wandered into Life Baby on Wednesday. Veraday and I. We were quite taken with a few of their products. Namely the flashcards. I guess they appealed to us with the minimalistic design and everything. Same like these clean cut designs by A Little Hut.

They are sold as pdfs so that you can print as many as you like, on whatever you like. Just that, erhmm, sometimes, I wonder if they appeal more to the adults than the kids. Hmm.

Still, it looks like a lovely buy no? On to the wishlist it goes! To buy or not to buy is the question (of the day).

First seen and pictures from, A Little Hut.

have wheels will travel

I think he has way too many sets of wheels (5! all different!) for one kid. They are all hand-me-downs but in perfectly good condition. We zipped off to the neighbourhood park yesterday evening where the boy got a bit wary of the grinding sand under the wheels but was otherwise quite happy.

Ok, he is making a show of knowing how to ride a tricycle. He usually just pushes himself forward, feet planted on the floor. Or well, sits and waits for someone to push him along.

abc's

letterpress stationery card by Sweetbeets @ Etsy

Like almost any family with a young child, we have a full set of alphabet mat, abc book and, I think, dvd on the alphabets. However with Jayden’s short attention span, he doesn’t quite sit still long enough to actually learn his abc’s. So we have taken to reciting them and getting him to repeat after us.

So far, his diction is passable on most of the letters (stumped by ‘W’! haha) though I think his sequencing is still way off.

soup crazy

soup’s here but where’s dad…

ah yes, you’re back. “soup please.”

“you know it is for me right?”

“mine mine! hurry up!!!!”

When we eat out (actually, at any meal really), we try to have some dish with soup. Because that is the current highlight of his menu. He’d excitedly tell you about ’soup soup’ and wait impatiently for you to feed him. Sometimes, he’d feed himself. In fact, he insists on it every now and then. He’s growing up! A mess but still most of it goes down his throat. And relatively well too.

Except for the one time he threw the tissue into the bowl and wanted to continue drinking. Hmm.

i'm so NOT going to Swensens

We had some Swensens vouchers to use so we trooped on over to J8 to dine. I think we won’t be going back there any time soon. Our last experience with them was a year ago (Plaza Sing outlet) and comparing the two, it was obvious there was a steep decline.

The only good thing was the service and the company. Jayden had fun drumming away at his plate-turned-drum and I went a bit trigger happy. Much to the regret of the diner seated at the next table. Heh. He was clearly uncomfortable in the beginning but soon grew accustomed to it. But really, you can’t see much of him. Jayden is obviously the focus.

He turned 22 months that day. He is becoming more self-aware and demanding. He knows what he wants and demands it of you. Although his language falls short, he still tries to make himself heard. He is getting there, but not quite there yet.

THE KIDDOS

Of siblings, a little man and a little miss, growing up in urban Singapore.

  • profileElder brother, Jayden; cheeky lil toddler going through the terrible twos and trying to assert his independence. Is currently easily bribed with POCKY.

  • profileYounger sister, Kathlene; sweet young thing that is still figuring her way out in the world. Is already exhibiting a strong character and looks likely to be the bully between the two. Is quite the charmer who loves being carried.
