DWUW

Pardon me for being a prude, stuck in the mud, totally uncool parent but I am not liking the latest revamp to Kids Central. In an effort to be more in tune to the children of today, I think they crossed the invisible line between what is cool and what is uncalled for. At least in my books they did.
DWUW is the latest slogan / tagline, whatever you want to call it that they are highlighting. No more Lenny and friends, instead you have a Nike slogan wannabe : DWUW — Do What You Want.
Quite frankly, for the audience they target, I question this latest move. What sort of a message are we sending our kids? No wonder you can find them readily thinking themselves lords of their world, lording over both parents and maids. At a fair on Saturday, a boy was spotted biting his maid as she tried to hold him in rein (and not send the fine porcelain crashing to the floor). Acceptable behaviour? Sure - Do what you want.
Yes, I know it is innocent fun. DWUW when taken correctly, can be liberating. Empowering even. But are our parents ready to steer their children in the right direction? TV, media in general, is a powerful influencer. Launch the website and the first thing that assaults your senses is the flash animation of the DWUW banner, the DWUW sound bites and then a small clip inviting you to take part in the contest to be the next DWUW voice. Suddenly it is all very hip and cool to do what you want. Nevermind the consequences.
Little wonder I am not a fan of Kids Central. Not anymore.
oh dear. that’s not a good slogan at all! especially when parents have such a hard time reining in their kids these days!!
I felt that given the wide age group that watch Kids Central, a bit more discretion would have been better.
honestly, i woudn’t take it too literally.
I’m still not quite comfortable with it as the younger children would take it literally.
I fully agree with you. I was quite horrifed when I first saw the trailer for DWUW. I also am not a fan of Kids Central though I let Shana watch Hi 5! once in a while.
I am equally prudish and I do not allow my kids to watch anything on KC if it is not within the KCDC segment, which is for preschoolers. Even my hubby frowns at some of the shows and you know men are usually more bochap. Those ‘preteens’ and ‘teens’ programmes have questionable values, e.g. lying by omission, unhealthy portrayal of BGR, etc. Then the boy shows are preoccupied by people/things bombing each other up. And you wonder why 12 year old girls are dating and boys are hyperactive. (-_-)
